I am a 6th year graduate student in Clinical and Developmental Psychology at The University of Pittsburgh. I work with Dr. Jana Iverson investigating patterns of language, social communication, exploration, and motor development in infants. In particular, my research focuses on infants with an older sibling with autism to identify early developmental markers of autism spectrum disorder.
Recently I have begun to work with school-age autistic children who have limited spoken language, with the goal of understanding how these children communicate with their caregivers.
I am also invested in increasing access to diagnostic services for underserved communities and involving stakeholders in research design.
I am applying to psychology internships (AAPIC) this fall.
Check out a few of my previous research projects, as well as some projects currently in the pipeline
My Master's thesis investigated how 18 month olds communicated with their caregivers at home. Specifically, we looked at moments when caregivers didn't understand what infants were trying to communicate. We looked at how often these "breakdowns" in communication occur and how infants are able to "repair" the breakdowns. We compared infants with and without an older sibling with autism, including a subgroup of infants who were diagnosed with autism at age 2.
Infants in all groups had frequent breakdowns and made repairs, but groups differed in the ways that they communicated.
This paper is currently under review and results were presented at the Society for Research on Child Language Disorders. Clicking on the poster will open it in another window.
In collaboration with Dr. Julia Parish-Morris and the Infant Brain Imaging Study, I have investigated patterns of vocalizations in the first two years of life that are related to later autism diagnosis and symptom profiles.
Our first publication, which was included in the IACC Summary of Advances in Autism Research in 2021, can be found here.
We have also begun to investigate how these profiles are related to school-age outcomes. Stay tuned!
My dissertation will focus on autistic children who have minimal on no spoken language. Communication in this group is under-studied and based in what we know about typical communication development. This study will ask caregivers questions about their child's communication and use naturalistic play observations to better understand how children with limited spoken language communicate in their daily lives.
If you or someone you know has a child between 5-10 years old who has less than 50 spontaneous words, you can email icl@pitt.edu to learn more about participating in this ongoing study. Flyer can be found here
